As the launch of my debut novel approaches, I've been striving to engage with other independent authors and learn from their experiences. This has been incredibly rewarding for two reasons. Firstly, since writing can often be a solitary pursuit, it's comforting to feel like you have peers. Secondly, connecting with an author after reading their novel is a delight, as it offers an insider's glimpse into the creative process behind a book you loved.
During my recent trip to Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Ramm, the author of Long Branch. Dan Ramm is an author, writer, and Emmy nominated producer who recently ventured into the literary world with the publication of his debut novel. He shared his experiences transitioning from scriptwriting to novel writing and offered many insights into his journey with publishing.
Long Branch follows Mason Powell, a once-celebrated actor known for his role as Sheriff Quinn in the hit TV series Tin Star. After his career declines due to typecasting, the COVID-19 pandemic, and financial mismanagement, Mason returns to his hometown of Long Branch, Georgia, aiming to revive his career. However, his plans are disrupted when he becomes entangled in a decades-old murder mystery. The twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end.
Although Mason Powell encounters several stressful dilemmas in this book, I found the novel comforting and the character relatable. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Joe Mantegna, and as a fan of Criminal Minds, detective Rossi’s voice was soothing and familiar. While reading, I caught glimpses of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with the character portraying an old-time western sheriff similar to Leonardo DiCaprio’s role. Additionally, it reminded me of the show, The Old Man, where a character you think you know transforms into someone completely different.
Rating: 5/5 for keeping me hooked all the way through, offering unexpected twisted and a satisfying ending
